Access to health care  should be a basic human right. Our reliance on private insurance  companies cannot assure affordability, universality, or equity in health  care. Single-payer government-funded health care, modeled on the  successes of the federal Medicare program but eliminating its defects,  is the answer to the profound defects in the way we currently pay for  health care.
